An official at an athletics event in the German city of Dusseldorf
in August died after being speared in the throat with a javelin.
The 74-year-old man was rushed to hospital after the accident
but died of his injuries.
The official, named locally as Dieter Strack, had gone to measure
a throw but was hit by a javelin before it hit the ground,
according to local media.The competition was called off after
the incident.
A statement on the website of the local athletics association
identified the man as Mr Strack and said he was a “much-loved
and experienced” sports judge.
LONDON 2012 PARALYMPICS SET
NEW RECORDS
The London 2012 Paralympic Games set a new standard for
Paralympic sport and were widely regarded as one of the most
successful Paralympic Games ever.
A total of 4,237 athletes competed in London, from 164
countries in 503 medal events. There were outstanding athletic
achievements on the field, with 251 world records and 314
Paralympic records broken, while off the field, the Games were
enjoyed by approximately 2.7 million spectators and broke
media coverage records internationally. More than 100 countries
broadcast the London Paralympics.
The medal tally was again topped by China, winning 95 gold
medals, followed by Russia (35), Great Britain (34), Ukraine (32)
and Australia (32).
GAELIC FOOTBALL GOALIE SETTLES
INJURY AWARD
A TEENAGE girl who had suffered a neck injury when a goalpost
fell on her six years ago while she was a goalie at a Gaelic
football match has settled her action against the GAA for
€50,000 damages.
Jessica Fidgeon Cush, of Lusk, Co Dublin, was 11 when the
incident occurred on October 21st, 2006, while she was on a
pitch at Starlights GAA Club, Collinstown.
Richard Kean counsel for Ms Cush, said she was knocked to
the ground when hit on the head by the goalpost. He said she
suffered a significant trauma and it was later discovered she had
suffered a neck injury. She suffered nightmares and flashbacks
after the incident and also suffered from headaches.
It was claimed the goalpost had been allowed to be or to remain
in a dangerous and unsafe condition. There was failure to carry
out any appropriate inspection of the goalpost and to ensure it
was adequately secured, it was alleged.
BOYS HURT IN FAIRGROUND RIDE
Two teenage boys were seriously injured after their carriage on
a spinning fairground ride broke off and flipped over.
The boys were injured while on the Mega Bounce Frog Ride, at
the Billy Bates fair in Abbey Park, Leicester, UK in July.
Danny Keogh and Conor Baker were on the spinning Mega
Bounce Frog ride when the terrifying accident happened. One
boy was catapulted into the air, while the other was crushed
under the weight of the car.
The Health and Safety Executive said an investigation had
begun.
