Surf Life Saving GB (SLSGB) and The Royal
Society for the Prevention of Accidents
(RoSPA) have issued Event Water Safety
Guidance for local authorities, charities,
sports organisations, event operators and
leisure companies.
The guide is a result of extensive research
into water injuries and deaths over a
variety of water sports. It is the first time
comprehensive advice has been brought
together in one place for organisations
handling activities from surfing to
boating and open water swimming.
The Guidance, sponsored by Sportscover
and with support from Derby University,
includes emergency planning, how
to choose the right equipment, risk
assessment and other health and safety
advice.
David Walker, leisure safety manager for
RoSPA, said, “This new guidance is the
first time that this information has been
collected in one place and should give
those involved with watersports a point
of help in every situation.”
Esther Pearson, Chief Executive of Surf
Life Saving GB said, “This document
aims to assist in the improvement of
standards by creating an overarching
strategic framework that sits across a
variety of sporting disciplines. By setting
a standard for safety for all water-based
events, we hope to reduce risk across the
country, allowing more people to enjoy
water-based activities on our coasts and
waterways.”
