more robust in the case of a fall, but keeping control of your
descent is made easier if you have a strong core and legs. Good
cardio conditioning ensures that fatigue will not weaken you to
the point that it is easier to fall over than to keep moving down
the slope.
Skiing is exhausting and if the sun comes out you will
experience sweaty discomfort. Despite the relative coldness
of the day, chances are you will get hot under all that water
proofed clothing. The best idea is to dress in layers. One layer of
thermals, some kind of insulating fleece over it, and then your
water proof gear on the top ensures that you can moderate your
clothing to suit the time of day and how hot and bothered you
are. Up in the mountains, the weather can change suddenly and
you should be ready at all times. Sundown can bring the chill,
so be prepared. Ensure that you check your fingers periodically
for signs of frostbite. This is not a condition only faced by Artic
explorers: every year many skiers have to cut their holiday short
to get treatment.
Skiing is a safe and enjoyable sport but there are risks. It is
important to know what they are and prepare for them.
