It may not have been Professor Pollock ’s intention to provide
ammunition for those who would ban or restrict children from some
or all competitive sport. However, whilst there is a legitimate point to
make about the risk of injury, we must ensure that we do not throw
the baby out with the bathwater. Surely the widespread increase in
obesity in children is a far greater concern and potentially far more
detrimental to the health of young people than being actively involved
in sport. A Sport England survey last year revealed that there was
a drop in sporting activity by youngsters aged between 16 and 25
compared to 2012. This is a disturbing statistic. If this continues many
of the children of today are likely to have major health problems in the
future brought on by a sedentary life style and poor diet. I am sure
that we have all read reports about the youngsters of today being the
f irst generation who are likely to live shorter lives than their parents
because of lifestyle issues. We need to rally against the politically
correct, do-gooders who would have all competitive sport for children
banned because of the emotional and physical impact on children.
In the words of my mother …..’ it didn’ t do you any harm’ !
