Spain to
host 2018 Women’s
Basketball World Cup
FIBA says Spain will host the 2018
Women’s Basketball World Cup.
Israel was the other country to
make the shortlist of bids.
Spain has one of the best women’s
teams in the world. It won the
European championship in 2013,
and was runner-up in this year ’s
world championship.
Spain hosted the men’s World Cup
last summer.
Indonesia
Indonesia could lose the right to host
the 2018 Asian Games unless its main
spor ting body changes a logo that
includes the Olympic rings.
The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) in
September approved Indonesia as hosts
for the games af ter Vietnam decided to
withdraw due to rising costs.
But
the
Internat ional
Ol ympic
Committee sent a letter to President
Joko Widodo warning the Indonesian
National Spor ts Commit tee (KONI)
could lose the games because of its use
of the Olympic’s f ive interlocking rings
in its symbol.
Ri ta Subowo, chairwoman of the
Indonesian Olympic Commit tee, said
the letter warned that using the logo
amounted to a “copyright violation” and
unless the issue was resolved the OCA
may rethink its decision to award the
2018 games to Indonesia.
Subowo said she had “reminded KONI
from the begining to drop the f ive rings
from its logo. It potentially violates the
IOC’s intellectual property rights”.
The Asian Games, the world’s biggest
multi-sport event af ter the Olympics,
are organised by the OCA, which is rec-
ognised by the International Olympic
Committee.
However, KONI deputy chief Manuel
Robert Inkiriwang insisted that the body
was the of f icial holder of the f ive rings
logo copyright.
“KONI has the legal right to use the
logo,” he said, adding that KONI had
abandoned the logo in 2007 but started
using it again in 2014.
The country ’s sports ministry said the
government was working to try and set-
tle the issue.
The 17th Asian Games took place in
South Korea last year.
England
International Paralympic Committee
( IPC) Athlet ics has announced
that London will stage the mara-
thon events of this year ’s World
Championships - but have denied
it has anything to with the hot tem-
peratures in Doha, who will host the
other events.
The IPC claims that the switch has
been made to better suit the racing
schedules of the leading marathon
racers and is not related to the fact
temperatures can reach as high as
35 degrees in Qatar, even in October
when the Championships are due to
take place.
Up to 12 dif ferent medal events will
now take place in the British capital
during the 2015 London Marathon
on April 26.
