A Kayaker’s Story:
T
here are no television talent shows
to enter, no celebrities to take them
under their wing and no major prize
money at the end for some lucky winner.
There is just training, hard work, and determination. It starts
before most of us wake up and is likely being thought about
by young Australians as they put their head down to rest
each night. This is story of Tom Green.
After moving to the Gold Coast at the age of nine you could
say Tom Green had the perfect start in life, spending his
youth playing endlessly down on the beautiful Gold Coast
beaches of Queensland.
It wasn’t long before his mum Meredith noticed young Tom
was showing incredible ability with any sport that involved
the water. His sporting days began in the Surf Lifesaving
“Nipper” ranks where he discovered a passion for the water
after winning his first Queensland under 11’s (U11) Board
Race Championship.
At 11, Tom competed at the Australian Outrigging
Championships and won all the sprint and marathon
events in his division. His efforts did not go unnoticed
and he was selected to trial in the U16 team for the World
Championships.
