The 2016 ITTF Women’s World Cup will be held at the United
States for the first time ever, as the International Table
Tennis Federation (ITTF) announced that USA Table Tennis
has been selected to host the event from October 7-9, 2016
in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The state-of-the-art Liacouras
Center on the campus of Temple University will host the World
South Korea has been selected to host the first-round games
of the international baseball competition next year for the first
time.
The organisers of the World Baseball Classic (WBC) have
announced that early rounds of its baseball tournament in the
Asian region will be staged at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul and
Tokyo Dome in Tokyo in March 2017. The WBC, a quadrennial
event that is sanctioned by the World Baseball Softball
Confederation (WBSC), features 16 national teams. South
Cup, which features the best 20 women’s table tennis players
on earth. This will be the first time an ITTF World Cup singles
event has been hosted on North American soil. The United
States previously hosted the World Team Cup (1992 - Las
Vegas, NV) and the World Junior Championship (2007 - Palo
Alto, CA).
Korea, the runners-up in 2009, have been paired with Taiwan
and the Netherlands in Group B and are waiting for a winner
from a qualification round in Brookyln, New York, where Brazil,
Britain, Israel and Pakistan will compete for the remaining spot
in September. Four teams will play in a round-robin format for
five days, starting March 7, 2017. In the same period, Japan
will host Cuba, China and Australia for their Group A contests.
South Korea are one of the 12 nations that qualified for the
2017 WBC based on their performance in the 2013 edition.
