Young players
and depression
Contrary to much research into depression, a report in the Herald Sun suggests
that young Aussie Rules players are negatively affected by the game.
A survey of 2007 to 2008 draftees conducted by The Australian Institute of Sport
“identified an alarming drop in confidence and withdrawal signs in some young
players who fail to succeed immediately in the AFL.”
It found that high levels of self regard can lead to greater levels of depression
should their career not progress to their satisfaction. Alternatively, “players with
lesser egos or a more grounded outlook were “better adjusted”, the report said.
Players are being targeted at increasingly young ages as clubs seek to find new
stars as a cheaper alternative to drafting in established stars. The pressure to
succeed in professional sport places a burden on young players, as well as a
minimised educational experience.
A source in the AFL said “Some young players are used
to being dominant players in their junior teams, but that
environment changes significantly when they join the AFL. All
of a sudden, they’re not the big fish any more.”
“And if they don’t get AFL games early, and the pressure
mounts, they can slip into a dark place pretty quickly. In a
way, that’s maybe a reason why clubs seem to be having
more success with rookie drafted players lately. They fly
under the radar a bit and less is probably expected of them in
comparison to the top draft picks.”
This report highlights the dangers of club’s failure to prepare
young players for the disappointments of professional sport,
but sport can also be a powerful method for preventing
depression.
Solitary sports such as surfing can help to relax the
participant.
Ryan Pittsinger, a doctoral student at the University of Iowa,
presented a paper to the American Psychological Association
in August that documented the increase in positive feelings and the decline in
negative feelings that resulted after test subjects rode waves for 30 minutes.
“Usually when you accomplish something, whether it’s the end of a football practice,
or a swimming practice, you have done something good for your body, but with
surfing it’s another level,” said Tony Gadachy, a Manhattan Beach resident and a
surfer for more than eight years.
