winner of the OpenWorlds. I have won several events in NZ,
most notably the top NZ invitational. I amcurrently ranked
no. 4 in the world and no. 1 in NZ
How often is the world championships held? Is this the first
time that you have participated? How did you get to qualify?
The Under 21 World Championships is held every two
years and is always immediately followed by the OpenWorld
Championship. You can qualify through ranking, through
amembership place (each country has a certain number
of spots which they can allocate to their players) or as a
wildcard.
I played in the Under 21 World Champs in 2015 as a
wildcard and finished 3rd
Does the sport require a high level of fitness? What training
do you do?
I enjoy running so amgenerally quite fit. It certainly helps,
given that we sometimes have to play up to 9 hours a day in
hot conditions.
What do you think needs to be done to attract new players
to the sport?
The sport needs to be made more accessible
through schools. I believe that if people try out the
game with a few mates rather than a group of oldies,
they are more likely to pursue it.
What impact is social media and new technologies
having on the game? Where do you feel that this will go
in future?
Social media is having a positive impact on growing
the game. At the World Championships this year many
of my matches were filmed and posted to youtube. This
was awesome to show my friends back home as well
as to introduce people to the game. I think that as this
technology improves it will become easier to share the
game, which can only be a positive thing.
How does Australia compare for facilities with other
counties?
I had the privilege of playing at the Victorian
Croquet Centre, the largest croquet centre in
Australia. The facilities were amazing. The clubhouse
was beautiful and the lawns were maintained to a very
high standard.
